Our Natural Shell walnuts are specially cleaned in our plant to provide customers with an alternative to bleached shells. These Natural Shell walnuts meet the internal U.S. #1 standard, yet are certified as U.S. #2 only because of their unbleached condition. Only the external state of the shell is different. Available in all varieties (Howard, Hartley and Chandler).
Traditionally, walnuts have been bleached to clean and brighten the shells. While modern harvest methods result in cleaner shells, many customers still prefer bleached inshell walnuts. Only Hartley walnuts are bleached at our facilities, using a mild chlorine and water solution. Our bleached walnuts are classed as U.S. #1 or, in the European Union market, EU Extra Class or Class I.
